A Health Career: EKG and Phlebotomy Technician

Melissa Amavisca knew she wanted to work in healthcare. http://ccpe.kennesaw.edu/healthcare After taking the Certified Nursing Assistant course, she went on to complete Phlebotomy Technician and EKG Technician. Now, she loves her job working in the ER. EKG technicians perform electrocardiograms and are one of the first people to assist patients experiencing cardiac symptoms. Phlebotomists work directly with patients to collect quality blood samples in clinical settings and prepare those samples for laboratory testing. A graduate of either course might work in a hospital, physician’s offices, clinic, nursing home or lab. We’ve found that taking both courses is a good way to be competitive in the job market since many healthcare employers are looking for professionals who can fill multiple roles.

I actually wanted to be a nurse. I wanted to go into the nursing program and most now require that you have experience in the field and you can’t get experience without being in the field, so I started the CNA class because I felt that was the most broad spectrum class. From there I ended up falling in love with the KSU program and taking the Phlebotomy and EKG which I ended up with a job in a blood lab, a startup company, then landed my job in the ER now. I’ve made so many friends, so many connections and just helping people is really my passion and this was the way to get to it.

For me personally, the most helpful thing I learned in EKG was actually reading them because we have heart attacks that come in and not everybody can actually read them just right off. The EKG machine doesn’t always tell us so I’ve been able to catch a few without actually the machine letting us know.

I liked Phlebotomy, that’s actually my favorite class. I was actually really afraid of needles before. So teachers actually gave us a good insight of how to help people are afraid of needles and I conquered my fear too.

I feel like they really prepare you for it, because a lot of people that are in that field currently don’t have that experience of walking in with you know a certification for Phlebotomy and EKG. It gives you that leg up. Keep applying is probably my best advice for getting a job. You’ll land one.

Know it’s something you really want to do. It’s a very difficult career path. Take advantage of the time that your given for the hands on because sometimes you’ll have some extra time in the class where the teacher is offering you know ‘We can give you some assistance, is there anything extra you want to work on?’ take advantage of that because really you need it. Just enjoy it, enjoy it while you can and get to know the people in your class because they’re the ones you end up working with. They’re your coworkers.
